📅 January 25, 2026

Anno 1920 - Philip Harper
An electric start from Cory, with nice cornet solo to open, and perc keeps a good drive throughout, and the themes are passed throughout all of the sections, horns particularly sounding extra classy. Sop sits nicely on top of the band, and the band create a well controlled sound for a big close.
Orbital - Richard Blackford
The band layer on themselves well, and euphs work well under the horns. Fantastic cornet solo, really showing of virtuosity and technique here, and this is then repeated similarly in the euph solo. The work slows down and we hear a nice flugel solo, with the basses creating a good sound underneath this, a real foundation for the band to sit on. There are some more nice cornet features here, ans the band a really warm sound. Pace picks up after this, xylophone is clear, and the band follow well with this, almost as a guide for more motifs to come. Trombs are back row work well together all throughout, and the technique throughout the band is class. This was a really fabulous performance well done.
Light Fantastic - Philip Wilby (soloist: Brett Baker)
Band accompany well all throughout this, and the soloist really covers all sorts of material crucial to being a soloist in this; an extensive range, overall technique, and the cadenza towards the start was extremely impressive. Movement two opens with nice flugel moments underneath the soloist, and some really good sound comes across in this from the soloist, and there are some stunning harmonies from the band here alongside it all, pushing for the absolute quietest dynamics in some places. Following this, good Harmon technique and displays more classiness from the soloist to open a new section, and throughout, it is made to like absolute ease standing in front of the band with such a high Standard of soloistic playing, having displayed every sort of performance technique in that solo. A massive congratulations to Brett for this performance.
Descent - Mark Boden
Tight cornets, euph and perc to open, with some nice horn moments throughout this as well, and the band prove all of the colours that are coming through in this piece. Euph and cornet sit well in the slower sections, along with Bari. Tempo picks up again, trombones and cornets really keep us pushing here, and it shows the dramatic tendencies of this piece.
Raveling, Unraveling - Philip Sparke
A clean technical opening from all around the band, particularly starting in the horns and also later being joined by the cornets. Sop once again sit nicely on this, and shines through in places. Trombs hold a really few phrases here, and the section really glue together and create such a sound. This theme eventually get passed around the band frequently, noticeably sounding great in the comets. Flugels have some really lush sounding bits throughout this, and work well again with the horn section. Technically challenging work picks up again, but it’s done immediately with style and cleanly, and dynamic and style fluctuations are really impressive throughout this performance, and the band do a brilliant job.
